TIANJIN, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese coal mine and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on Sunday jointly launched a methane gas treatment center.

The unveiling ceremony was held at the 2017 China International Mining Congress in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin.

The non-profit organization, which has more than 10 council members, will promote the best colliery gas treatment practices to help UN members cut carbon emissions in the energy industry.

Scott Foster, director of UNECE's sustainable energy division, said China leads the world in fixing the issue of collecting and using mine gas and thus cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Jin Zhixin, president of the Chinese partner Shanxi Coking Coal Group Co., Ltd., said in the next three to four years, it will build 12 gas-fired power plants with a combined generating capacity of 71.4 MW.

The center is a concrete action taken by China to tackle climate changes by using more clean energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, said Sun Yongfu, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
