The Shanghai Consumer Council has urged shopping malls and restaurants across the city to undertake a comprehensive review of their safety measures after a 6-year-old girl was killed by a falling dressing mirror on Saturday evening.

According to Xinmin.cn, the council told the Feizhou International shopping mall to make public the facts and cause of the accident that happened at an I.T outlet located on its second floor.

I.T, one of Hong Kong’s largest retail stores of fashion brands, said in a statement that the company was deeply regretful about the accident and would fully cooperate with investigations. The shop also said it has begun safety check on all its other stores.

Representatives from the fashion brand and the mall also sent a team to the child’s family to express their condolences.

The accident happened at the I.T Outlet where the girl identified by her surname Yao was shopping with her parents and grandmother. Reports said that the child was found to be unresponsive and vomiting blood after the mirror had fallen on her. She died due to severe craniocerebral injury in the nearby hospital.

Local media reported that dressing mirrors in clothing stores in Shanghai are usually left leaning against walls and are unsecured. The one involved in the accident weighs between 50 and 60 kilograms.
