Infections outside Hubei continue downward trend
From:ChinaDaily   |  2020-02-25 09:44

Confirmed infections of COVID-19, an epidemic caused by a novel coronavirus, on the Chinese mainland rose by 508 on Monday to 77,658, according to the National Health Commission.

With a daily increase of 71 deaths, a total of 2,663 people have succumbed to the pathogen, according to data released by the commission on Tuesday morning.

Most new infections were reported from Hubei, center of the outbreak, and only 9 additional cases were reported from elsewhere — showing regions outside Hubei are continuing to see the daily increase of new infections drop.

A downward trend in new infections outside Hubei lasted 16 days before it was disrupted on Thursday, mainly because of infection clusters reported from prisons. The downward trend resumed thereafter.

While 18 new cases were reported outside Hubei on Saturday, 11 additional people were found to have contracted the virus in these regions on Sunday.

The commission also said 530 suspected cases were added on Monday. There are now 2,824 suspected infections on the Chinese mainland.

Among the 47,672 patients still hospitalized, 9,126 exhibit serious symptoms. To date, 27,323 people have been discharged from hospitals as of Monday at midnight, the commission said.

Of the 641,742 people who have been traced for their close contact with infected patients, at present 87,902 people are under medical observation, it said.

In Hubei, 499 cases were confirmed for the 24 hours ending Monday at midnight, bringing up its total to 64,786, according to the province's health commission.

The epidemic had claimed 2,563 lives as of Monday at midnight and 68 of them died that day.

Wuhan, ground zero of the epidemic, outnumbered all other cities in the province for newly reported confirmed cases with 464 infections, followed by Xiaogan with 17.

It also had the highest death toll. With another 56 deaths on Monday, a total of 2,043 people of the city's population of 11 million have succumbed to the virus. Xiaogan was again second, with 110 fatalities in total.

To date, 37,896 people sickened by the virus are still hospitalized. Of them, 7,090 people exhibit serious symptoms and 1,585 are in critical condition.

The commission said 53,474 of a total of 251,265 close contacts that have been traced in the province are still under medical observation.
