一场主题为“这里是湖南——湖南文化走进联合国”展览活动1月4日晚在纽约联合国总部拉开帷幕。湖南省委常委、省委宣传部部长张文雄，联合国助理秘书长、联合国开发计划署助理署长兼亚太局局长徐浩良先生和联合国新闻部新闻与媒体司司长江华女士及近百位嘉宾应邀出席。

An exhibition activity themed by “Here is Hunan——Hunan Culture approaches the United Nations” came off on the evening of  January 4th in the headquarter of UN in New York. Guests invited to the ceremony were Zhang Wenxiong, standing committee of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and minister of Publicity Department of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, Xu Haoliang, assistant secretary-general of the UN, assistant administrator of the United Nations Development Program and director of Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau and Jiang Hua, director of News and Media Department of the UN Ministry of Information as well as about 100 other participators.

本次活动由湖南省人民政府主办，湖南省人民政府新闻办公室、湖南省人民政府外事侨务办公室及美国亚洲文化传媒集团共同承办，联合国中国书会协办。活动不仅包含由自然篇、人文篇、政治篇和经济篇四个部分组成的图片展。活动现场还安排了介绍湖南文化和人文的歌舞表演，以及湘绣刺绣及湖南茶道演示。

The activity was sponsored by People’s Government of Hunan Province, jointly undertaken by Information Office of People’s Government of Hunan Province, Foreign Affairs Office of People’s Government of Hunan Province and Asian Culture Media Conglomerate of the USA and organized by China Book Club& Fareast Book Society of the UN. The activity not only contained the photo exhibition composed of natural, humanistic, political and economic chapters, but also offered the introduction of Hunan culture and singing and dancing performance as well as a display of Hunan embroidery and tea ceremony performance.

湖南省省委宣传部部长张文雄在致辞时说，“这里是湖南——湖南文化走进联合国”展览正式开展，是一件很有意义的事情。今天的展览会既是一场“视觉盛宴”，也是一场“文化盛宴”。这是湖南与世界、湖南文化与世界文明的一次“零距离”亲密接触。他用“一粒种子”、“一座书院”和“一部电影”分别介绍了杂交水稻之父袁隆平、世界最早大学之一的岳麓书院和美国电影《阿凡达》取景地的故事，向来宾讲述湖南文化及其与世界的联系。张文雄表示，今天走进联合国总部，用图片、文字和视频的方式展示湖南文化，就是想让世界各地的朋友近距离感受一个独特的、富有魅力的、立体真实的湖南。

The minister Zhang Wenxiong made a speech, “The official opening of ‘Here is Hunan——Hunan Culture approaches the United Nations’ exhibition is of profound meaning. The exhibition today offers us a visional and cultural feast. This is a zero-distance contact between Hunan and the world, between Hunan culture and the world civilization.” “A seed”, “An academy” and “A movie” were applied by him to introduce the story of Yuan Longping, father of hybrid rice, Yuelu Academy, one of the world’s earliest universities and Avatar, an American movie taken in Hunan. He expressed that approaching the headquarter of the UN and displaying Hunan culture with pictures, characters and videos were aimed at bringing friends all over the world closer to experience a unique, charming and genuine picture of Hunan.

湘绣是中国四大名绣之一，是勤劳智慧的湖南人民在漫长的人类文明历史发展过程中精心创造的一种具有湘楚文化的刺绣工艺。在现场进行湘绣展示的中国刺绣艺术大师成新湘女士告诉记者说：“题材广泛、色彩浓郁、风格大气、针法多变”是湘绣最大的特色。她表示，在联合国举办湖南文化展览，可以让中国走近世界，也可以让世界更深入地了解中国。

Hunan embroidery, one of four most famous embroideries in China, was an embroidery craft with Xiang-Chu culture and carefully created by diligent and intelligent Hunanese during the long history of human civilization. Cheng Xinxiang, while displaying Hunan embroidery on the spot, told the reporter, “Hunan embroidery is mainly featured by extensive themes, strong color, majestic style and changeable stitch.” She held that Hunan cultural exhibition held in the UN could bring China closer to the world and also help the world have a deeper understanding of China.

联合国助理秘书长徐浩良在接受记者采访时说：“以前对湖南的了解可能是有关湖南人能吃辣，湖南有著名景点张家界，以及湖南人的性格比较刚烈和直爽等。而通过观看今晚这个展览则加深了对湖南文化、历史、自然和人文等等方面的认识和了解。比如中国四大发明之一的造纸术就源于湖南，以及在国际上享有很高声誉、解决了成千上万中国人吃饭的杂交水稻就是湖南科学家袁隆平及其团队培育的等。”

The assistant secretary-general Xu Haoliang said in an interview, “Before the exhibition, people’s impression of Hunan is that Hunanese can eat spicy food, Hunanese are very staunch and Zhangjiajie, a famous scenic spot, is located in Hunan. However, after this exhibition tonight, they have deepened their understanding of the culture, history, nature and humanity of Hunan. For example, papermaking technology, one of four great inventions of ancient China, originated in Hunan. And Yuan Longping, a world famous scientist in Hunan cultivated hybrid rice feeding tens of thousands of Chinese with his team. ”

徐浩良还表示，当晚的展览从经济、城镇化和脱贫减贫等方面展现了湖南在改革开放几十年来取得的巨大成就。尽管在一些边远山区湖南仍有近600万的人口等待脱贫，但中国政府已经设定了到2020年消除贫困的目标，联合国业已制定了到2030年消除贫困的目标。因此，中国通过湖南省在经济、政治和人文等方面表现出来的一些元素与联合国所追求的和平、发展和平等目标是相同一致的。

He added that the tremendous achievements made by Hunan in decades of reform and opening practice were displayed in terms of economy, urbanization and poverty by this exhibition. Although near six million population in outlying mountain areas was still waiting to be lifted out of poverty, the 2020 Goal to Remove Poverty was set by Chinese government, and the UN also set the goal of eliminating poverty by 2030. Therefore, some elements, showed by Hunan province for China in economy, politics and humanity and other aspects, shared the common goals of peace, development and equality pursued by the UN.

With the beginning of the New Year, everything takes on a new look. Today, I feel great honored to witness the historic moment when the exhibition “Hunan Culture into the United Nations” is officially launched. 2015年9月28日，中国国家主席习近平在参加联合国大会一般性辩论时讲道，“人类文明多样性赋予这个世界姹紫嫣红的色彩，多样带来交流，交流孕育融合，融合产生进步。”今天，我也愿意像很多致力促进东西文明交流的朋友那样，做个文明的使者、友谊的使者，把美丽的湖南介绍给各位。

On September 28, 2015 when President Xi attended the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, he said, “The diversity of civilizations adorns the world with beautiful colors, the exchange of which also promotes each other.”Today, I’d like to join those who pledge to promote exchanges between the oriental and western civilizations. I’d like to be a messenger of civilization and friendship to introduce our beautiful Hunan.

湖南是中国中部的一个省份，位于长江中游，总面积21.18万平方公里，总人口近7300万，分别居中国第10位和第7位。湖南人文荟萃、人杰地灵，在中华文化的灿烂星空中，湖南文化是其中最为璀璨夺目的一颗明星。这里，我想用三个故事，向各位讲述湖南文化及其与世界的联系。

Hunan, a central China province in the middle reaches of Yangtze river, covers 211,800 square kilometers （the 10th place in China）with a total population of nearly 73 million（the 7th place in China）. Hunan has been recognized as a place with splendid resources, heavenly treasures, outstanding people and smart land. Hunan civilization is a bright star in China’s multi-ethnic family. Here, I’d like to share you about Hunan civilization and its connection to the world.

澧县城头山古文化遗址

第一个故事，是关于一粒种子的。很多朋友都知道，在国际上享有很高声誉的杂交水稻，就是湖南科学家袁隆平院士领衔的团队培育的，它解决了中国人的吃饭问题，让全世界千千万万的人们远离了饥饿，可以说是一粒种子改变了世界。实际上，湖南本来就是“种子”的故乡，是人类稻作文化最早起源地，迄今发现的世界最早稻粒就是在湖南出土的，至今已有18000年到22000年的历史。直到今天，湖南仍是中国稻谷产量最高的省份，有人说“插根筷子都能发芽”，包括棉花、苎麻、生猪等产量也都位居中国前列。

The first story is about a seed. As is well known, a Hunan scientist and academician Yuan Long ping and his team successfully cultivated the hybrid rice. The rice enjoyed a high reputation in the world because it helped ensure enough food for Chinese people and also keep away the starvation problem for people in the rest of the world. To some extent, we can say it is a seed that has changed the world. And the seed actually comes from Hunan where the grain of rice unearthed was proved to be the oldest in the world with a history of 18,000 to 22,000 years. Until today, the rice yielding of Hunan is still the highest in China and the production of cottons, ramie and pigs are also among the highest list in China. There goes a saying, that is, even chopsticks can germinate in the earth.

岳麓书院

第二个故事，是关于一座书院的。从野蛮愚昧走向文明开化，是人类进化的基本诉求。世界上最早的大学之一岳麓书院，也坐落在湖南，至今已有1000多年的历史。宋朝时期，中国学术文化最前列的两个顶级大师朱熹、张拭曾经在这讲学论辩。这说明，湖南是人文鼎盛、人才辈出之地。以书院诞生的时间为刻度，往上追溯：闻名世界的中国古代四大发明，湖南做出重要贡献的有造纸;中国古典诗歌有两个源头，一个是北方的《诗经》，一个是南方的《楚辞》，《楚辞》作者屈原就生活在湖南。往下看：湖南人王夫之，是与黑格尔并称为人类思想夜空“双子星座”的中外两大古典哲学家之一;近代以来，湖南涌现了一大批杰出人才，包括曾国藩、左宗棠、谭嗣同、黄兴等，有人说“一部湖湘英烈图，半部中华近代史”;很多朋友所熟知的新中国开国领袖毛泽东主席，也是湖南湘潭人。美国著名历史学家裴士锋在最近出版的《湖南人与现代中国》一书中，对这个现象做了一个很有意思的评价，他称这是近代湖南出现的一次“文艺复兴运动”。

The second story is about an academy. People tend to get rid of savagery and ignorance and become cultivated during the evolution process. Hunan has the world’s oldest college, Yue Lu Academy that has a history of over 1,000 years. In Song Dynasty, Zhu Xi and Zhang Shi who walked in front of the Chinese academic culture often had a lecture or debate at Yue Lu Academy. All of these are signs that Hunan is a hometown for many talented people. And when we go back to the time before the founding of Yue Lu Academy, we can have more interesting founding: The paper-making technology, one of the four Great Inventions of Ancient Time, was discovered in Hunan; The origin of classic poem in southern China, The Song of Chu, was created by Qu Yuan in Hunan while that in northern China was the Book of Songs. What’s more, the Hunan scholar Wang Fu zhi was called the Gemini in the night sky of Hunan thought with Hegel, another classic philosopher in Germany. Since the modern times, Hunan has emerged a batch of elites including Zeng Guofan, Zuo Zongtang, Tan Sitong and Huang Xing. Some people think that a collection of heroes anecdotes in Hunan can be taken as half of a book of China’s modern history . Our Great Chairman Mao, as you all know, is also from Xiang Tan, Hunan. In his recently republished book Hunanese and modern China, the famous American historian Stephen R. Plum had an interesting recommendation that in the modern had a renaissance movement

“乾坤柱”山峰

第三个故事，是关于一部电影的。很多朋友一定都看过好莱坞电影《阿凡达》，电影中的“哈利路亚山”，原型就取自湖南张家界景区的“乾坤柱”山峰。这充分表明，湖南山清水秀，湖南文化是一个“饱眼福”的文化。为什么这么说?湖南是中国“最绿”的省之一，森林覆盖率接近60%，到处是浓淡相宜的水墨画卷;也是“最清”的省之一，境内有中国第二大淡水湖洞庭湖，有湘江、资江、沅江、澧水四条大江;还是“最蓝”的省之一，空气质量非常清新。当然，我们还有好戏、好书、好电视看，湖南卫视《爸爸去哪儿》等节目风靡中国、影响广泛。

The third story is about a movie Avatar, which many of you must have seen before. The pro-type of Avatar Hallelujah Mountain is in the scenic areas in Zhang Jia jie, which shows Hunan with picturesque scenery has a culture that can feast your eyes. And we have every evidence to say that. With the near 60% forest coverage , it’s a most green province that looks like adorable ink-and-wash paintings; It’s a most clearing one with China’s second biggest freshwater lake Dong Ting Lake and Four rivers as Xiang River, Zi River, Yuan River and Li Shui River; It’s also a most blue one with fresh air. Of course, we have good operas, books and TV programs. For example, the program Where are we going ,Dad has  gained much popularity in China.

文化是世界语言，文化沟通人类灵魂。湖南高度重视加强与世界各地的文化交流，近年来先后举办了中国(芷江)国际和平文化节、“汉语桥”世界大学生中文比赛、中国(湘潭)齐白石国际文化艺术节等活动，吸引了世界各地的朋友，得到了包括联合国在内的很多国际组织的关注，有力促进了湖南与世界的互动。

Culture is a universal language that links man’s souls. Hunan has long been giving high priority to the cultural exchanges with others in the rest of the world.  Many activities, such as China Zhijiang International Peace Culture Festival, "Chinese Bridge" Competition” and China (Xiang Tan) Qi Baishi International Art Festival , have attracted attention from numerous foreign friends, and the international organizations including the UN Nations.
