After 12 years, “Big Fish & Begonia”finally to debut tomorrow

Fans must have waited for 12 years. After such a long time, people must have almost forgotten how two young men decided to direct a Chinese style animation by themselves after the animated short film “Big Fish & Begonia” caused a big stir on internet at 2004. However, Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun finally come back with a mature feature-length film after such a long time.

The story is said to be inspired by a myth from the ancient Chinese Taoist classic “Zhuangzi” and mingled with other Chinese classics such as “Classic of Mountains and Seas” and “In Search of the Supernatural”.

A girl named “Chun” who lived at the “Mansion of Gods” turned into a dolphin on her 16 years old birthday and came to the world of men. In the ocean, she was caught by a net. A human boy died for saving her. Later, she endured a lot of difficulties in her own world to bring the boy back to life and help the boy’s soul – a small fish as big as thumb to grow into a fish bigger than whale and return to the ocean.

Liang Xuan, the film's writer founded B&T Studio with his friend Zhang Chun. In the course of film-making, they faced a lot of difficulties. Liang Xuan even dropped out from Tsinghua University when he was 21. At the beginning, they couldn't get any funding until 2007, when a small amount of money finally came in.

Many animation fans called it "the dawn of the Chinese animation industry" and voted it as the "most anticipated animated film." While “Monkey King: Hero Is Back” achieved great success last year and rock star Zheng Jun’s “Rock Dog” is to debut at the same day in America tomorrow, “Big Fish & Begonia” should not disappoint the long-waiting audience.
