Twenty Chinese and South Korean students from Shanghai colleges went on a trip to Jiuhua Mountain and Yangzhou recently, tracking down the footprints of Silla historical figures in China, who made contributions in the history of Sino-Korean intercourse.

The event was hosted by the Consulate General of ROK in Shanghai and aimed to let young people review the history and look into the future, and to promote the youth exchanges between the two countries.

The delegates first came to Jiuhua Mountain in the city of Chizhou in E China’s Anhui Province, searching for the footprints of Kim Gyo-gak. Kim was a Silla prince (Silla, 57 BC – 935 AD, one of the ancient kingdoms of Korea) , who sailed over to China in 719 AD (Tang Dynasty) at the age of 24 and then practiced Buddhism in Jiuhua Mountain for 75 years. After he died, he was believed to be the manifestation of Ksitigarbha in Jiuhua Mount because of his devoutly belief and hard practices. Jiuhua Mount thereafter became the sacred site of Ksitigarbha and one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism.

The 20 students, including 7 Chinese and 13 South Koreans come from Fudan University, East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Business School and Xianda College of Economics and Humanities in Shanghai International Studies University. Most of the Chinese students major in Korean language while the S Korean counterparts study education, accounting, market management and so on.

The delegates climbed Jiuhua Mountain, walking on the way of Kim’s practice. About 100,000 South Korean visitors come to Jiuhua Mountain every year.
