Chinese books win “most beautiful book in the world”

The 2018 "world's most beautiful book" awards were recently announced in Leipzig, Germany. Two Chinese books, "Notes for The Art of Gardening" and "Tea Canon", recommended by Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau won the prize.

The winning Chinese books are both new editions of the ancient books. Notes for The Art of Gardening is notes written by Chen Zhi for The Art of Garden-Building, world’s earliest garden design monograph which was written in 1634 by Ji Cheng, a famous garden expert in the Ming Dynasty. The latter embodies rich aesthetic concepts of garden-making.

With eight tea books in “The Si Ku Quan Shu”, or “Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature” as the chief source, Tea Canon which irritates Chinese tea culture selects nine pieces of treasured Chinese ancient tea-themed paintings and calligraphy works as inserts. Through modern design language, the two awarded book designers have presented the two classic Chinese elements-- garden and tea to the world.

Organized by Stiftung Buchkunst, a German book art foundation, the competition examined over 600 works from 33 countries to select the most beautiful of the year. Fourteen books from six different countries or regions won prizes.
