Celebrated hairy crabs from Jiangsu scuttle straight to Shanghai tables

Jianhu County in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, which produces the famed Jiulongkou hairy crab in the Jiulongkou Ecological Wetland, has announced it will open an outlet store in Shanghai, allowing Shanghai residents to satisfy their taste buds on their doorstep.

With pure water and lush aquatic plants, the wetland is quite suitable for hairy crabs, with the Jiulongkou hairy crab being highly sought after.

At the Shanghai Agricultural Exhibition held recently, Jiulongkou hairy crabs worth nearly 100 million yuan were sold to Shanghai customers.

Shao Jianhua is a farmer from Jianhu County whose prize 630-gram male and 425-gram female hairy crabs have been separately evaluated as king and queen crabs in this year’s Jiulongkou Crab Competition in terms of body size, appearance, weight, body length and plumpness.

"This year’s Jiulongkou hairy crabs are generally large. Male crabs mostly weigh over 400 grams and female crabs 250 grams and are of good quality,” said Shao.

It is expected that since high-speed trains from Nantong Station to Yancheng Station have been opened,  making the distance from Jiulongkou to Shanghai shorter, more agricultural products from the wetland will be shipped to Shanghai.
