Yi Jiefang: a mother’s deeds for a greener China

As a person with a strong will, Yi Jiefang is persistent. At 38 years old, she quit her stable job in China and went to Japan for further studies. She and her husband started from scratch there. In 2002, she and her husband Yang Antai returned to China to fulfill their deceased son’s will: planting trees in Inner Mongolia, in order to fight against the sandstorms in North China. Millions of volunteers from across the world have joined the ranks of her NPO (non-profit organization) Greenlife, turning the desert in Inner Mongolia into oases. For Yi, afforestation has become a mission and part of her life. “China has the world's largest man-made forest. We are very proud that we are doing our bit for this cause,” said Yi.
