World’s largest LNG ship completed in Shanghai
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-09-27 14:02

The world's first 23,000 TEU capacity LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) powered container ship built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group, a subsidiary of the China state shipbuilding corporation (CSSC), on behalf of CMA-CGM, a French shipping firm, was launched from a shipyard in Changxing Island, Shanghai on September 25.

Being the largest container ship in the world, the ship marks a great leap in China’s high-end marine equipment manufacturing from the role of "following-up" to "leading" after breaking the long-term technological grip over the industry by South Korea and other countries.

In 2017, Hudong-Zhonghua and CMA CGM signed a contract for the construction of five 23,000-TEU container ships. Remarkably, the construction of the ship launched today began in 2018.

With a total length of 400 meters and a width of 61.3 meters, the ship enjoys a load capacity of nearly 220,000 tons and can carry 2,200 40-foot refrigerated containers.

Thanks to the LNG power design, it can meet the most stringent emissions requirements in the world. Compared with the same type of traditional fuel tanker, this type of vessel will reduce CO2 emissions by about 20%, nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 85%, and particulate matter and sulfur oxide emissions by 99% on a single voyage.

The MK III membrane fuel tank the vessel adopts, which is high to extreme high-end, has been developed by Hudong-Zhonghua itself due to a foreign technology blockade. It is the first time it has been manufactured in China, and with dozens of technical bottlenecks having had to be overcome, it is a marvelous accomplishment.
