A T-shirt design competition themed on “My motherland and me” was held in Shanghai Yaohua School. Amid the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the competition aims to celebrate the motherland’s birthday and arouse teenagers’ patriotism.

Since the competition was started in September, a plethora of designs have been submitted. With Chinese elements such as the national heritage Peking Opera, the national flower Peony, the Chinese-style architecture and dragon prints, the shirts are quite modern and of abstract aesthetics.

The evaluation had two stages. After being selected by the committee of judges, 13 excellent works were voted for online to choose a top three. More than 6000 netizens have participated in the vote.

According to a person in charge of the organizing, the T-shirts not only convey students’ deep understanding of the national traditional culture, but also combine modern design ideas.

Emily Xu, the first prize winner, said that her design creates an image of a dragon riding on the waves, an element from Chinese mythology.
