The annual World Laureates Forum is once again being held in Shanghai. On Tuesday October 29, over 600 attendees took part in the opening ceremony which was held in the Lin-gang New Area.

Chinese president Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the forum, saying that science and technology are great activities of mankind. He also said that the development of science and technology must have a global vision and grasp the pulse of the times. Xi added that China is willing to work with other countries to strengthen scientific research, conduct closer cooperation, promote scientific progress and meet the challenges of our time.

Excited about the letter, Shanghai Municipal Party Committee Secretary Li Qiang said that Xi’s words have given a clear direction to international scientific and technological cooperation in an all-round way so as to build a community with shared future for mankind. Shanghai, in this respect, will speed up its upgrading as a technological innovation center with global influence.

At a meeting before the ceremony, Roger Kornberg said that he was very glad to see the forum held in Shanghai, a charming and cosmopolitan city. The World Laureates Association will fully rely on this global platform of innovation exchanges in science and technology, bring together participants at all levels to exchange thoughts and ideas, carry out collaborative innovation, encourage more top scientists to come to Shanghai for academic exchanges, deepen scientific research cooperation, and train young scientists, so as to make technology a bigger force in driving the world’s development and benefiting mankind.

Themed “Science and Technology for the Common Destiny of Mankind”, the Forum will last for four days (until November 1).
