Rotate, jump and shake...Serbian cultural charm sprang forth in the cheerful dancing steps. KUD Batajnica, an ensemble of folk dance and song from Serbia’s Belgrade, recently came to Shanghai and presented three performances to their Chinese friends.

Founded in 2004, the ensemble has been active in art festivals across Serbia and European countries. It has almost 200 members aging from 11 to 26.

This was their first time to perform in Shanghai and China. They displayed a variety of folk dances from different parts of Serbia, showcasing the splendid Serbian culture and arts.

Milan Mutapcic, Director of KUD Batajnica, said they felt very pleased to perform in Shanghai, noting that,“We are a group of young art lovers. You can see the costumes on the dancers were hand made. Every dance was performed by people probably 100 years ago.”

Although, for most members, it was their first time to be in Shanghai, they didn’tfeel outofplace.“There are a lot of Chinese people living in Belgrade, and that’s the reason we feel like being at home,” said the director, wrapping up his words with,“Thank you for your hospitality and lovely food.”

“I hope we will come to Shanghai again and again!” Milos Mutapcic, a dancer said happily when packing up after their first show in Fengxian District.

During their stay in Shanghai, the ensemble members also viewed the flat drum playing and dancing by Fengxian performers as well as visited Jiading Confucian Temple and Nanxiang Old Street in Jiading District, sampling the Shanghai customs and practices.

The event was organized by Serbia’s Far East Society Association, with the Shanghai People’s Association for Friends with Foreign Countries (SPAFFC) acting as a go-between.

The two sides have been working closely in their people-to-people exchanges. Goran Vasiljevic, President of the Far East Society Association, was a laureate of the Magnolia Gold Award 2016 conferred by the municipal government of Shanghai.

In addition, recommended and connected by these two associations, the Shanghai-based Little CompanionArtTroupe of ChinaWelfare Institute Children’s Palace, as the only representative in Asia, went to Belgrade to take part in the “Joy of Europe” festival during the past Chinese National Day holidays.

The Chinese and Serbian kids also recorded a video saying,“I love you, China! Sino-Serbia friendship is everlasting and unchanging!”
