Craftsmanship with traditional culture aids Shanghai cashmere brand go global

Guo Xiuling, technical creative director of Shanghai Sandriver Fashion Technology Company, announced that she will showcase high-end cashmere products at the upcoming Maison&Objet Paris, an international trade fair dedicated to lifestyle fashions and trends. For Guo, one of the “2019 Shanghai Craftsman” title winners, it is another opportunity to bring her pashmina brand-- Sandriver--out of a small town to the world after nearly two decades’ hard work.

In Shanyang Town, Jinshan District of Shanghai, the Sandriver factory has been growing for nearly 20 years. Each year, Guo Xiuling and her craftsmen make nearly 2,000 individual explorations into combining modern art with their (traditional) handcraft weaving technique. Together they have realized more than 20 patents for the unique cashmere handicraft art. Traditional Chinese cultural elements like A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains, a national treasure painting, the piglets images in the paintings of artist farmers from Shanghai’s Jinshan district, as well as the unique flying apsaras figures in Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, are often presented on the cashmere products of Sandriver.

Since the dying out technique has aroused attention from Europe, it is not the first time Sandriver has been on the international stage, but the Maison & Objet show, one of Europe's three famous fairs, will be a milestone one.

At the Maison & Objet exhibition, Sandriver will display a cashmere handicraft art series and a comfortable home life series of products for the first time, including cashmere rugs, bags, home clothes and travel suits to show to the world China's exquisite traditional craftsmanship.

Although the Sandriver products are already popular globally, the showcase at Maison & Objet will further clarify the positioning of the brand and its transformation from a fashion brand to a cross-over art and lifestyle brand.
