Ten new landmarks of Shanghai have been officially decided on after careful selection.

On January 6, the Architecture and Culture Society of China selected the Ten New Landmarks of Shanghai.

The selected buildings were all completed after 1978, the year when China launched the policy of reform and opening up. They are: Shanghai Tower, Shanghai Hongqiao Transportation Hub, Jinmao Tower, Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower, West Bund Media Port, Xintiandi, National Exhibition and Convention Center, Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, Shanghai Grand Theatre, and Mercedes-Benz Arena (formerly Shanghai Expo Cultural Center).

As the panel commented, there is no doubt that Shanghai is a benchmark of China’s modernization. Since the founding of New China in 1949, and especially since reform and opening up, Shanghai has entered a new takeoff era, becoming a city with a truly international influence. Shanghai’s new landmark buildings should be consistent with such global influence. The choice of a city landmark depends not only on its size, but also on the influence of its design ideas and the height it reached in building techniques.

In addition to the selected ten buildings, the Qian Xuesen Library & Museum, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and other projects were also on the finalist list. Each of them has witnessed the evolution of Shanghai.
