Six months of trash redefined
By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-01-10 10:36

Shanghai has taken the lead in China’s drive for waste sorting, and it has been half a year since the city’s new garbage sorting regulations took effect.

According to a report, overall, garbage sorting in Shanghai has outperformed expectations. As of November 2019, the amount of residual waste was 33% less and household food waste was twice that of October 2018, hitting 8,710 tons per day. And the amount of recyclables increased by 3.7 times compared with December 2018. Hazardous waste also saw an increase of 1,300%.

In a residential area in Changning district, apart from the trash bins for different types of waste, a set of food waste degradation equipment has also been installed, so that kitchen waste can be disposed of without being transported outside the neighborhood. Normally, when the kitchen waste is transferred, the drippings are an annoyance for nearby residents and also do harm to the environment. Thanks to the degradation system, people can have a better environment.

Statistics show that the rate of garbage separation of the residential area has reached 100%, with 45% being recyclable and reusable. The amount of garbage also reduced by 35%.

In the city’s office buildings, each floor is also equipped with dustbins for waste separation. To reduce the amount of waste, office workers have been ordering less food deliveries, with more of them taking homemade meals to work.

Hotels and buses across Shanghai have also made changes for the new regulations. Trash bins have been removed on buses, and more dustbins have been installed in bus stops and transportation hubs. To be people-friendly, there are wet tissues for passengers who have just thrown away their garbage before getting on the bus.

Garbage transportation and disposal is also key to the city’s fight to develop garbage sorting. In a solid waste collection and transportation center in Xuhui district, trash trucks are busy running to different dumping sites. Different types of garbage are compressed and then packed into different containers, which are then transported by cranes and fork trucks to the dock. Then they will be shipped to Laogang, a recycling center which treats 9,000 tons of garbage per day.
