Shops reopen and vitality returns to streets
By:Wu Qiong   |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-03-13 18:44

Shops on the city’s streets have now reopened to the public. Whether it is the popular bookstore The Mix Place Shanghai and the well-known bakery BaiYuLan Bread Fang in Xujiahui commercial area, or the coffee shops in Jing’an District and those time-honored food brands in Huangpu District, the city is gradually returning to its normal vigor.

After the reopening of some major commercial streets, the commercial atmosphere of some lanes, small roads and back streets in Huangpu, Changning, Pudong, Jing’an, and Xuhui has become stronger. While obeying strict epidemic prevention and control procedures, the streetside shops and stores are striving to restart operations as soon as possible.

Take Kangqiao in Pudong New Area for example. Nearly 50 percent of shops have so far reopened their doors. Each shop’s location, information of its owner, and its opening hours are on record in the urban management staff’s minds.

Having lived in Shanghai for over ten years, Dieter from Germany runs a bakery on Xiuyan Road, Kangqiao. He was back to work a couple of days ago. He told the urban management staff that face masks, gloves, disinfectant and forehead thermometers had been prepared before the shop was reopened.

Including Dieter, there are now 12 workers in the shop. After presenting their health QR codes and reporting their travel history in the past days, they were allowed to begin operations during the epidemic outbreak.

To avoid crowded gatherings, the urban management authority has called for offering take-away rather than eat-in service. “I have also thought of that. We advocate take-away service by offering discounts,” said Dieter, who took out a flyer that encourages customers to order take-away service.
