Food delivery of university canteen raises controversy

The logistic group of Zhejiang University and Eleme, a Chinese online ordering platform, reached a strategic cooperation to launch a food take away service and bring meals to students’dormitory roomson July 7. The food ordering and delivery company also announced that it will provide that service to 2000 other universities in 300 cities around China within a year, sparking controversy.

Those supporting the plan believe take away food is a necessity amid the current anti-epidemic period, since it can avoid contacts in normal dining and Eleme promised to disinfect the delivery box and have the delivery men’s temperature taken several times a day.

Others praise the fact that campus canteens launching delivery services can save students’time. Liang Jing, a second year university student, often orders a take away meal near the end of the class and has it as soon as she arrives at her dormitory. “I have to spend at least one hour for each meal due to the queuing time and the to and from journey. Ordering a take-out meal can save lots of time,” said Liang.

Moreover, the campus delivery can provide students with part-time jobs. “I often bring ordered food to the dormitory for my roommates, and now I can make money by doing that”,  said a student surnamed Gao who applied for the delivery job of his university canteen immediately after it announced the recruitment. “The salary will be enough for my basic daily expenses,”said Gao.

However, others don’t think it’s necessary to launch such a service, with the majority of decriers describing students paying for the canteen-to dormitory delivery service as being lazy.
