Fudan students recast public health version of “Mojito”

As Jay Chou’s new single Mojito is going nuts on the internet, students from the School of Public Health of Fudan University, authorized by Jay Chou’s record company, adapted it for a public health version which quickly became a hit.

Although it was the first time Li Jiaxuan and Zhang Boya, the two undergraduates, had adapted a song, they said it went quite smoothly. The fact that doctors and grassroots anti-epidemic staff members amid a new coronavirus outbreak in Beijing must wear airtight and heavy protective suits in the June heat inspired them to finish writing the lyrics within just one hour.

With the help of Jay Chou’s fans, they got in touch with the record company which unexpectedly gave big support to their idea of adapting the viral song into a public welfare song. Through several email communications, they quickly completed the free authorization procedure.“We thought it would take a long time, but each time we sentsome information by email, they soon replied to us,”said Li Jiaxuan.

As soon as the new song was posted, it caused wide sensation, reaping 12,000 views as of July 16. A retiree who has been devoted to the public healthy industry for more than 30 years was even moved to tears when hearing the song eulogizing the sacrifice and devotion of public health practitioners.

The plain lyrics also enchanted Yang Zichen, the singer. In her words, it is the plain words that touch listeners most.“Listeners are able to understand the public health workers’hard work and commitment,”said Yang.
