The expansion project of the northern part of the Shanghai Botanical Garden was started on August 5th, and will take about two years to finish. The brand new section will be opened to the public in August, 2022.

This expansion project is one of the preparatory of main projects in Shanghai in 2020. According to Tong Libin, deputy director of the Shanghai Botanical Garden, with regard to the variety of vegetation, the northern section will introduce more than 3000 new plant species in addition to the 7000 species already in the southern section. This will make the total number of plant species in the Shanghai Botanical Garden reach the standard ofafirst-class international botanical garden.

Within the northern section several more specialized gardens will be established to show visitors various kinds of vegetation including moss, lichen, vines and rock plants. Unlike the southern section, the plants exhibited in the northern section will be of a type more suitable for the general public to grow at home on their balconies or windowsills.

After the expansion project, two more greenhouses will appear in the northern section. One will be a cold house, covering an area of 500 square meters, and another will be a butterfly greenhouse, covering about 1500 square meters. Both these types of greenhouse have never been seen in the southern section of the garden before and are quite rare even among all the parks in Shanghai. The cold house will mainly introduce some cold zone plants. Combined with other types of vegetation, it will provide tourists with a changing view of four seasons. Inside the butterfly greenhouse there will be real life butterflies which will keep people company while visiting.

Meanwhile, another highlight of the northern section in the Shanghai Botanical Garden will be the artificial lake that covers an area of about 29,000 square meters. From above, the lake looks like a waterfowl with a long neck lying on the water. Two sightseeing footpaths of different heights willbe built around the lake, while there will also be a landscaped pontoon bridge about ten meters high where tourists can overlook the lake as well as the nearby flower gardens and grasslands. Another plank road closer to the water willallow visitors to observe various kinds of aquatic plants and animals at close range.
