School’s food car contest inspires pupil’s innovation

It is a special cross-country race. The competition vehicles are made of fruits and vegetables like carrots, eggplants, grapefruits, pumpkins and oranges. They are the creations of pupils from the Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School.

In a grade two science class of the school, students are seen arduously running their fruit cars on an inclined track.

According to Chen You, the science class teacher, basic knowledge about friction and shaft function had been taught within 6 classes to students before they drew sketches and chose vegetables to make a food car.

Although students were encouraged to design their cars together with parents, all the cars should be made in the class. Bringing piles of ingredients as well as tools, the children began their innovation. Some polished the carrot slices to make them round, and some others skewered their car components together.

Besides the prize for the vehicle that moves furthest, the “Best Creative Award”“Best Wheel and Axle Design Award” and “Best Performance Award” were also presented to the children.

In addition to the contest, students are required to reflect on the difficulties they encountered making their vehicles, the things they have learned from the activity and the improvements they think the course can make.

What touched the teachers most was the unity and friendship among the children. For example, although the competition was fierce, students felt excited for the champion car as if they themselves had stood out, and when a girl’s car fell apart their friends comforted her and helped reassemble the car.
