Free admission at over 100 museums tomorrow
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-05-17 11:29

MORE than 100 local museums will mark International Museum Day tomorrow by not charging visitors.

The 104 museums taking part include popular attractions such as Shanghai Auto Museum, Shanghai Museum of Glass and China Maritime Museum, said a Shanghai Cultural Heritage Administration official.

International Museum Day was established in 1977.

This year’s theme is “Museums and Contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.” The theme highlights how the acceptance of a contested history is the first step in envisioning a shared future under the banner of reconciliation, according to the International Council of Museums.

Reservations are required at some of the museums, such as the World Expo Museum and Shanghai Auto Museum. Green, or fast-track, channels will be opened for senior visitors.

The administration has publicized the list of museums offering free admission tomorrow on its official website — wgj.sh.gov.cn (no English language service) — along with telephone numbers of the museums.

Visitors are advised to contact the museums to check whether large numbers are expected before heading to the museums, the official said. Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, for instance, can only cater for at most 600 visitors in the morning and a further 1,000 in the afternoon tomorrow.

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, the Natural History Museum, Shanghai Cinema Museum and the privately owned Shanghai Guanfu Museum are offering half-price entry tomorrow.

To cope with the expected rise in visitors, 40 museums will stay open until 9pm tomorrow.

Some museums will hold special activities for children this year. The Shanghai Insect Museum, for example, will exhibit more than 200 butterflies from around the world in a temporary exhibition with introductions on each of the species.
