Film festival jurors announced

THE jury panel for the Golden Goblet Award of the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival was announced yesterday.

The festival’s organizing committee also released the first batch of eight nominated movies for the main competition.

This year’s festival received a record 2,528 entries from 106 countries and regions, of which more than 400 movies will be selected to constitute the list of Film Panorama and some of them will be shortlisted for various sections of Golden Goblet Awards.

This year’s Golden Goblet Awards jury will be chaired by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu.

The jury panel for the main competition comprises Chinese director Cao Baoping and screenwriter Li Qiang, American-Macedonian filmmaker Milcho Manchevski, Japanese director Hiroyuki Tanaka, known as Sabu, American producer Gary Michael Walters, and Chinese actress Xu Qing.

Jurors for the documentary category include Finland’s Iikka Vehkalahti, Japan’s Kazuhiro Soda and China’s Du Haibin. For the animation category, American animation director Tony Bancroft, Japanese animation director Junji Kobayashi and Chinese screenwriter Yuan Mei will be the judges.

The first batch of eight nominations for the main competition of Golden Goblet Awards are: “Reminiscence” (from Japan); “Brigsby Bear” (United States); “Fault Condition” (Romania); “I’m A Killer” (Poland); “Kharms” (Russia); “Mad to be Normal” (United Kingdom); “My Brother Simple” (Germany); and “Our Time Will Come” (Hong Kong), by Ann Hui.

Hui’s movie will also be the festival’s opening film.

The festival will be held from June 17 to 26.
