Researchers find green solution on carbon gas
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-06-13 01:29

LOCAL researchers have found a new approach to convert carbon dioxide directly into gasoline.

The finding — which will help to recycle the gas and produce cleaner energy — was developed by CAS Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Conversion Science and Engineering, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute and was published in Nature Chemistry, a leading scientific journal, yesterday.

Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas and China is one of the biggest greenhouse gas emitters. The research presents a promising application to recycle the gas.

“Because carbon dioxide is extremely inert, previous recycling was mainly on converting it to chemicals like methanol,” said Zhong Liangshu, one of the project researchers.

“But our findings are able to convert the greenhouse gas into value-added chemicals with two or more carbons like gasoline directly. And the conversion is of very high efficiency due to a newly developed catalyst,” Zhong added.

Liu Ziyu, another researcher of the project, said “the produced gasoline is clean, without nitride or sulphide that might cause acid rain.”

The research also said the stable performance of the catalyst suggests promising prospects for industrial applications of the project.

Zhong said though the cost of the direct conversion is currently higher than using fossil fuel, the future application is promising. As it consumes carbon dioxide, it will help to solve climate challenges and overreliance on fossil fuel.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that China’s carbon-dioxide emissions will peak around 2030.

In addition to targeting industry reconstruction to make China greener, the country is also making efforts at boosting technology development to help to achieve the environmental targets that China has set itself.
