SHANGHAI Animation Film Studio, which created the cartoon image of Monkey King 59 years ago, has been compensated with nearly 25,000 yuan (US$3,660) by two firms for using its new creation of the baby Monkey King.
The image of the baby Monkey King made its official debut in January 2012 in a 3D animation film, said Minhang District People’s Court. But a toy manufacturer, called Xinshang, made the baby Monkey King doll without getting permission.
The dolls were put on shelves in supermarkets run by Shanghai Jiuhai Parkson.
Shanghai Animation demanded that the firms stop infringing its baby Monkey King image and sought 150,000 yuan as compensation.
Jiuhai Parkson claimed it just offered venues for selling, but the court ruled it should also take responsibility.
