Police deploy new tactics in summer travel season
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-07-21 13:30

SHANGHAI police said yesterday they had stepped up a crackdown on crimes for the summer travel season.

In Changning District, thefts around Shanghai Zoo, a popular tourist spot, have increased since June as they do each year.

But police have implemented new patrol plans based on past statistics and increasingly watch for suspicious activity using surveillance cameras.

The number of the thefts in this area so far was down 60 percent from the same period last year, Changning police said.

In downtown Huangpu District, a gang of seven who were suspects in nine burglaries in Dapuqiao and Laoximen areas this year which caused about 1 million yuan (US$150,000) in losses to the residents affected were recently caught.

Huangpu police said that to solve burglaries and thefts they are more and more looking at details of crime patterns and becoming more efficient in determining the identities of suspects.

The number of burglaries in Shanghai in the first half of this year was down 20 percent from the same period last year and the number of pickpocketing cases down 6.7 percent, police said.

Meanwhile, patrol officers’ newly upgraded Personal Digital Assistants have yielded results in more efficient identity checks. The PDAs enable faster data transmission and are connected to a “strong database.”
