Man caught 14 years after teen’s killing
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-07-28 02:29

A MAN who allegedly stabbed a 16-year-old boy to death in a robbery at a grocery store in suburban Shanghai 14 years ago has been finally arrested, police said yesterday.

Police in Chongming District, where the murder took place, found out the suspect’s identity on July 14 after they were contacted by police in neighboring Zhejiang Province.

They caught the man in the same province the next day.

The killing happened on July 14, 2003, at the entrance of a grocery store in Nanba area of Miaozhen Town about 8pm.

The investigation was impeded by heavy rain that evening and the fact that the killing took place in a sparsely inhabited area surrounded by fields.

But police did collect a blood sample and circulated the suspect’s DNA nationwide.

An intensive manhunt across Chongming Island turned up nothing after a year, but police kept the case alive because of the circumstances of the boy, surnamed Gu, and his family. Gu had lived in destitution with his mother, who had a crippled leg. His father had died many years earlier.

On July 13, police in Pinghu City matched the DNA of a suspect on their files from an old case with that of the Chongming murder suspect.

But he had used another man’s national identity card.

However, they matched his fingerprint with another sample on file with Zhejiang police from 2010 and identified him as a man surnamed Wang.

Chongming police caught Wang at the factory where he was working in Jiashan county, Jiaxing city, on July 15.

He allegedly confessed that he had robbed the store because he was short of money, and that he had killed the boy with a dagger during a struggle.
