Toddler held at knifepoint in robbery
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-07-28 02:29

A MAN accused of robbing a woman of about 5,600 yuan (US$830) in a supermarket garage by holding her son hostage at knifepoint has been arrested, according to prosecutors in Minhang District.

The incident occurred about 9pm on July 5 in an underground garage of a Carrefour outlet as the woman surnamed Zhang was about to drive home with her 2-year-old son, prosecutors said.

When she had just started her engine, the suspect surnamed Liu, wearing a mask and wielding knife, rushed out, broke into the car and seized the boy from the rear seat at knifepoint.

Liu demanded money from Zhang and she gave all she had on hand — 600 yuan. Not satisfied with that, he forced Zhang to call her husband, who rushed to the scene with 5,000 yuan cash, arriving within 10 minutes.

Police received report early the next day and traced Liu by checking roadside cameras.

Liu told police he had searched for targets for several hours, saying he needed money because he had lost all his savings gambling.

He has been charged with robbery.
