White-collar workers don’t shape up
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-08-09 01:29

NEARLY all local office workers were found to have health problems during check-ups last year.

Ninety-six percent of them were affected, up from 87.6 percent in 2011, according to a survey report released yesterday by Shanghai Foreign Service (Group) Co, a human relations management agency.

Being overweight, fatty livers and hyperlipidemia are the top three health risks among white-collar workers, said the report. It was based on the health records of 500,000 office workers in Shanghai.

The overweight rate rose from 15.1 percent to 35.3 percent over five years.

Males were more at risk than women in the three key risks. The report showed that 53.2 percent of the male office workers had overweight problems, while 46.4 percent had fatty livers and 26.3 percent hyperlipidemia.

For women, the top risks were breast lobular hyperplasia, thyroid abnormalities and external hemorrhoids. Almost 85 percent of the surveyed female workers had lobular hyperplasia, 33.9 percent thyroid abnormalities, and 23.4 percent external hemorrhoids.

Unhealthy life styles involving rich diets and a lack of physical exercise were cited by the report.
