FOLLOWING the recent law change allowing couples to have a second child, local hospitals have reported an increase of couples in their 40s applying for in vitro fertilization services.
Medical experts warned that there is only a 5 percent success rate for women over 45 years old to get pregnant through IVF technology. There is also a higher rate of miscarriage and children with congenital deformities due to older age and dropping egg quality, said Dr Teng Xiaoming from Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital.
“Some families simply want to have twins through IVF technology. It is a wrong idea as there is much more risk for twins and multiples, such as premature delivery.”
