More gifts to engage residents in garbage sorting
From:Shine  |  2018-03-09 10:29

Shanghai’s greenery authorities are trying innovative ways to get more people hooked on to green account cards by expanding the scope of redeeming gifts and promote the online use of cards.

About 3.8 million households have registered for the green account scheme, which was launched in 2013. It uses a point system by which account holders earn points by separating dry and wet rubbish and disposing them in appropriate bins.

However, half the cards have not been used, and less than 20 percent of card holders actively use them, according to Qi Yumei, an official from Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

Qi said part of the reason for the cards’ lack of use was either the redeeming gifts were not attractive or were too slow on delivery.

Qi said they have expanded the food items by including some local specialities from regions like ChengkouCounty in Chongqing, WanzaiCounty in Jiangxi Province, and SuihuaCity in Heilongjiang Province.

In Changning District, residents used their green account points to redeem a variety of items like fresh fruits, vegetables, rice, black fungus, fish and soybean.

“Richer variety of gifts will boost the enthusiasm of residents in garbage sorting,” Qi said.

Xu Aijuan, a 79-year-old resident living in Maotai Road, redeemed greens, salt, cooking oil and rice with the points. She still had more than 2,000 points left in her card as she actively participates in garbage sorting every day.

“It is a surprise and delight to find so many items for exchange now. Previously it used to be only soap and milk,” Xu said, adding that she was more interested in vegetables and fruits.

Qi said authorities were also working on improving the delivery efficiency. Online use was also being promoted.

“In the future, residents will be able to redeem the points by scanning the two-dimension code on their mobile app,” said Qi.
