Changning making way for more senior care facilities
From:Shine  |  2018-03-30 15:29

Additional senior care facilities with over 1,100 beds will be built in Changning District by 2020,helping alleviate the acute shortage downtown.

The community senior care and daycare centers will be built across the 10 subdistricts and towns in Changning.

Many obsolete hostels, office buildings and factory houses are being converted amid the shortage, the district's civil affairs bureau said.

"Most seniors living in Changning will be able to reach a senior care facility near their homes by 2020," Zhang Wei, director of the bureau told a press conference Thursday.

The city's senior population grew 5.6 percent last year from 2016, accounting for 33.2 percent of permanent residents. In Changning, the proportion of senior residents is even higher at 35.5 percent, or 200,000, Zhang added.

About 40 percent of Changning's residents will be aged 60 or above by 2020, making the scarcity of senior care facilities more acute, she said.

To meet demand, a construction material market on Wuyi Road and a former camera factory will be converted into senior care homes this year.

A new senior home under construction on Hongqiao Road will include 50 beds to accommodate seniors with dementia. The facilities will be completed by September.

With these efforts, the district will have a total of 6,920 beds in senior care facilities by 2020.

Furthermore, the district's health authority has been offering medical services and setting up clinics in senior care homes. Residents at major senior homes in Changning can receive medical services directly.

Some 70 percent of senior residents will also sign contracts with general practitioners to receive medical services at home.

The downtown district currently has 42 senior care facilities with some 6,000 beds. The government has subsidized every senior resident receiving afree physical check every year, with additional inspection items when compared with the city's standard and accident insurance.

The district government has also been renovating apartments for impoverished families to improve the living standards of seniors.
