Free entry at Shanghai museums on May 18

VISITORS to 105 museums in Shanghai do not have to buy entry tickets on May 18 as the city celebrates the International Museum Day.

About 80 percent of museums, including Shanghai Museum and the World Expo Museum, will also remain free on the May 19-20 weekend.

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Shanghai Natural History Museum, Guanfu Museum and Shanghai Film Museum will offer half-price tickets on May 18.

Discounted tickets will also be available at the film museum over the weekend.

Shanghai History Museum will exhibit its silverware collection. The exhibition will run from May 18 to August 19.

At China Maritime Museum, an exhibition of shipwrecks and porcelain exports on the Maritime Silk Road is currently on. Over 240 pieces and top relics from 22 museums around China will highlight the trade and cultural items along the Maritime Silk Road from Tang (618-907) to Qing (1644-1911) dynasties in China.

The exhibition will last till August 7.

Next Friday, 46 museums will extend their admission hours to 9pm and hold colorful events for the public in the evening.

At Shanghai Museum of TCM, visitors can learn how to roll dried mugwort into sticks for moxibustion. At Shanghai Entomological Museum of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, visitors will be shown the process of making silk from cocoons.

At the Tou-Se-We Museum in Xuhui District, Chinese Kazakh folk artists will give performances, but the event requires reservation. Visitors can call 54249928 to reserve from May 15 to 17. Full lists of the museum deals can be found on the government’s official Weibo and WeChat accounts.
