Nobel Prize winners to promote science and technology in Shanghai

More than 30 scientists who have won top international awards like the Nobel Prize will gather in Shanghai in November to discuss establishing global scientific cooperation.

The forum, organized by the Global Nobel Prize Scientists Association, will be held annually besideDishui Lake in the Pudong New Area.

“We will invite as many as 30 Nobel Prize winners and as many as 100 additional important scientists and entrepreneurs,” said Roger Kornberg who is the Noble Prize Laureate in Chemistry of 2006 and chairman of the association.

Kornberg considered the forum to be an “important milestone” in advancing science in China and increasing the contribution from China to the world.

He said Shanghai has become a leading city for scientific develop and should enhance basic research, which is a very important part in boosting scientific innovation and attracting talent from all over the world.

Kornberg has a laboratory in Shanghai and a research group atShanghaiTech University.

“There is no cure for many diseases, and we know much less than 1 percent of human biology," he said. "(This)should be solved through basic research,” he said.

The association plans to expand its number of members to 100 within the next three years, which will make the association one of the most important of its kind in the world.

Wang Hou, secretary general of the association, said Shanghai is becoming the center of China’s technological innovation. The forum will add another cherry on top of that development.

The forum will focus on demonstrating the up-to-date scientific achievements made by the Nobel Prize winners.

“By bringing scientists, government bodies and entrepreneurs together,” Wang said,“the forum aims to offer more possibilities for science to do more good for human beings.”
