City sizzles as mercury hits 35.7
From:Shine  |  2018-05-18 02:29

It was the hottest day of the year yesterday as the temperature touched 35.7 degrees Celsius in Xujiahui.

Since 1873, the benchmark Xujiahui weather station has recorded 14 “high temperature days” — or over 35 degrees — in May.

On Wednesday, the temperature was 35.4 degrees, making it the third hottest day ever in May. It soared to 35.7 yesterday, equaling the record set in 1876, 1903 and 1915.

It is rare to see two consecutive “hot temperature days” in May. The only previous occurrences were in 1876 and 1919, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The subtropical high had started weakening late yesterday, and citizens can expect some relief from the heat. It will be cloudy to overcast today and there is likelihood of rain too.

The high will drop to 31 degrees today, and to 25 over the weekend.

The cool weather condition will last until the first half of next week with the rains to ease by Tuesday.
