Local hospitals started to offer the latest surgical technology for people suffering cataracts and other eye problems at the same time.

Trifocal diffractive intraocular lens implantation can solve cataract, myopia, astigmation and presbyopia in one surgery.

“Elderly patients usually have more than one eye problem. A simple cataract surgery or single intraocular lens implantationcan’t solve all these problems during one procedure,” said Dr Lian Jingcai, president of Shanghai Xinshijie Eye Hospital.

“With people’s rising demands for life quality, elderly people also have higher requirements for their eyes. They are not satisfied with just being able to see, they want to see clearly through the surgery.”

He said the new surgery allows patients to enjoy similar vision to young people, and that it's suitable for middle-aged people and the elderly who have high requirements.

“The trifocal diffractive intraocular lens implantation is a high-end technology both at home and abroad. So far, about 5,000 such surgeries have been conducted in the world, first being carried out in 2012 in Europe and then China in 2016,”Lian said.
