Woman with cervical cancer gives birth to healthy boy

Dr Hua Keqin checks the newborn boy of a patient with cervical cancer

A 32-year-old woman successfully delivered a healthy boy after being diagnosed with cervical cancer during pregnancy, the Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital of Fudan University announced today.

The woman was found to have cervical cancer in the 13th week of pregnancy. She went all the way to the gynecology and obstetrics hospital after other hospitals said the only solution was to abort the baby and remove her entire womb.

“After checking the patient’s condition, we decided to offer her individualized chemotherapy and allowed her to continue the pregnancy,” said Dr Hua Keqin from the hospital.“We wanted to help her achieve the dream of becoming a mother.”

The patient received caesarean surgery on April 5, when the fetus was found to be in critical condition. She delivered a boy through emergency surgery.

Doctors carried out a minimally invasive surgical procedure on the patient’s cervical cancer on Monday. The surgery was successful.

Hua said it is not rare to find pregnant patients with cancer.

“With medical developments, we should adopt more human-centered and individualized therapy instead of merely terminating pregnancies,” she said. “Giving regular and individualized treatment while maintaining the patient's fertility and life quality should be the aim of doctors.”
