A forum titled "Predecessors and City Memory" was held in Shanghai on Tuesday where participants heard the history of Shanghai's reform and opening-up, Shanghai's sister cities development and the Pudong New Area's development.

The stories behind the preservation of historical buildings during Pudong's development, the city's land lease reform trial, and predecessors who made big contributions to the city's reform and opening-up were shared during the forum.

Chen Yixin, deputy director of Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, shared Shanghai's exchange with sister cities over the past 40 years since Shanghai's reform and opening-up.

Shanghai had 85 sister cities in 57 countries by the end of last year.

The city has been actively cooperating with international sister cities in economics and finance, science and technology, urban construction, culture, health, sports and talent, and deepening exchange, Chen said.

Pan Guang, a researcher with the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, talked about the role of predecessors in promoting the opening-up of Shanghai, while researcher Han Hanjun with the institute of economics at the academy shared stories of the construction of Shanghai's financial center and his insights into the financial sector.

Zhang Jingyue, former researcher with the Shanghai Audio Visual Archives, used rich video and image materials to display the development and changes of different aspects of Shanghai people's lives like clothing, food, housing and transportation since the city's reform and opening-up, while Li Xin, an official with the city’s foreign affairs office, introduced the city's Magnolia Silver Award history to participants.
