Search continues for missing crew

Ten crew remain missing after a ship sank near Wusong Dock following a collision with another vessel early yesterday morning.

The sunken ship Shunqiang was loaded with 3,000 tons of steel roll as well as 13 crew. By yesterday evening, 10 crew remained missing while the other three were rescued.

The Shanghai maritime search and rescue center received a report at 1:38am yesterday that the Shunqiang was sinking after a collision with another vessel, the Yong蔗n, near Wusong Dock.

Together with the Shanghai Maritime Bureau, the center sent 10 marine patrol boats, two tugboats and two salvage ships to the scene. A helicopter joined search efforts at 5:23am. Divers sent by East China Sea Rescue Bureau arrived at 9:55am.

According to the Shanghai Maritime Bureau, three ship crew were rescued after the collision, while the remaining 10 crew remained missing as of yesterday evening. Search work is still going-on and ships passing the area have been requested to help look for the missing crew along their voyage routes.

According to the rescued crew, at least three cabins were locked as some personnel were sleeping when the accident happened.

The Shunqiang was heading towards Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.
