City unveils new tourism ideas to lure travelers
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2018-09-07 02:29

SHANGHAI aims to attract 360 million domestic travelers and 10 million foreign tourists a year by 2020 as it works to evolve into a world-famous tourism city, according to the local tourism authority.

The goal set for the number of foreign tourists visiting Shanghai by 2035 is 14 million.

The Shanghai Tourism Administration said that on the basis of suggestions received from the public, it will design some tourism routes in the city and its varied neighborhoods under a Reading Structure project.

By establishing a tour guide system, tourists will be able to read stories about the city’s history, culture and life behind the buildings they visit.

This idea will also be tried during the upcoming Shanghai Tourism Festival, which will be held between September 15 and October 6. A new “micro tourism” event, called Reading Shanghai, will be launched during the festival to promote neighborhood wandering as a way of traveling in the city.

Seven routes have been designed for this event in Huangpu, Jing’an, Xuhui, Changning, Hongkou and Yangpu districts as well as the Pudong New Area, featuring Shanghai-style elements like buildings along the Bund, local industrial culture and the development of the film and television industry.

For example, Hongkou provides a route for foreigners that will focus on the life of Jews in Shanghai during World War II, with English introductions. Shanghai was a visa-free city during that turbulent period.

A new mobile phone application, Shanghai Quality Life, will be unveiled during the festival. The app uses latest scientific technologies such as artificial intelligence and plurilingual translation to display information about local dining, living, transport, travel, shopping and entertainment.

In addition, a group of multifunctional and intelligent public tourism service centers will be deployed to provide travel information using AI.

Cruise trips along the Huangpu River will be one of the highlights of the festival. During the weeklong National Day holiday, the second stage of Shiliupu Pier will open to the public with the use of online sales platform.

In the long term, Shanghai plans to build itself into a world-class city for cruise tourism, providing more innovative cruise tourism products and improving the tourism environment near local docks.
