Public, experts choose best souvenirs
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2018-10-23 02:29

TWENTY-FOUR souvenirs, ranging from candy to silk scarves, have been chosen as Shanghai’s best specialty products based on public voting and evaluation by experts.

The competition was organized by the Shanghai Consumer Council.

Among the souvenirs are White Rabbit candies, Leiyunshang sachets, Park Hotel palmier, Sunya kouxiangsu (a Chinese pastry), Fenghua soap, Lifeng beef jerky, Shenxiang pearl powder, Shikumen yellow wine, Liushen Florida water as well as jewelry cases, silk scarves, tea cup sets and table runners from the Shanghai Museum.

The stories behind the products were also featured during the survey.

Most of the souvenirs are time-honored brands in Shanghai.

“The jewelry case drew inspiration from a wine vessel dating back to the late Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC), it features many creatures such as the rabbit, ox and dragon,” said Sun Fanzhe with Shanghai Museum. “The design by ancient craftsmen is very ingenious.”

The case is made of alloy with a color enamel technique used to simulate a bronze vessel. It is decorated with crystal, making it “exquisite and shining,” she added.

A silk scarf designed by the museum bears the auspicious patterns of flat peach, signifying blessing and longevity.

The souvenirs were selected from 135 products, with 43 entering the second round after an initial round of assessment by experts, according to the council.

In the second round, 2,000 consumers both at home and abroad were surveyed and an expert evaluation was conducted.

The experts marked the souvenirs on quality, fashion sense and regional features to make the final decision.

“The products had to be Shanghai brands,” said Tang Jiansheng, deputy secretary-general of the council.

“In addition, they should be well recognized by consumers and have an obvious advantage in quality and fashion sense.”

The manufacturers should also have consumer rights’ protection and a good service system.
