Alliance to promote exchange between Shanghai and Hong Kong universities

Eight universities in Shanghai and eight in Hong Kong established an alliance on Tuesday to promote cooperation in education and research.

The universities including Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong and Tongji in Shanghai and Hong Kong University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Universities in Hong Kong and Shanghai has been deepening and expanding their cooperation and exchanges and has made great achievements in recent years, said Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, at the establishment ceremony held at Fudan University on Tuesday.

She said Hong Kong had more than 300 student exchange programs and over 1,300 academic research cooperation programs in collaboration with universities in the Chinese mainland. Among them, 73 student exchange programs and 148 academic research cooperation programs are carried out with universities in Shanghai and 30 percent of Hong Kong students who took part in exchange programs last year came to Shanghai.

She said the new alliance, the third of its kind signed between universities in Hong Kong and their counterparts in the mainland, was expected to promote cooperation in talent cultivation and scientific research, as well as innovation and transforming research outputs to application, supporting high-quality development of the two metropolises and the country as a whole.

Weng Tiehui, vice mayor of Shanghai, said the alliance was a result of the MOU signed between the two cities in August and was a milestone in the history of cooperation and exchanges between universities on both sides.

She hopedthe alliance will promote more productive cooperation, including joint curricula development, mutual recognition of courses and credits, students teaching and internship, teacher exchanges and joint research programs.

She said the Shanghai government would provide favorable policies, fund and staff to support the alliance.
