The driver who was caught after his own dashcam video went viral on the Internet has been detained and faces a criminal charge of dangerous driving, police said on Tuesday.

The motorist, Zhou, was seen on the video driving at 248km/h on an elevated road and police in the Pudong New Area summoned him on Monday.

Police said the alleged offence took place on the Middle Ring Road near Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone where the Disneyland is located.

Zhou has allegedly admitted that he accelerated to 240km/h on the evening of October 18, driving from Baoshan District to Pudong.

He said he himself uploaded the dashcam recording to a WeChat group.

Zhou has expressed regret, police said.
