Art removed as decapitated dolls turn shoppers off
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2018-12-27 08:29

The “amputated” heads, arms and legs of plastic baby dolls seemed to be just part of an art installation in a downtown shopping mall until they disappeared yesterday.

Gala Mall, in Lujiazui, removed the installation after local media reported the negative reactions of some shoppers to it.

The installation on the first floor of the mall was intended to make people think about how they are manipulated by artificial intelligence, the mall told local media on Tuesday.

The controversial content of the installation included masks and skeletons.

A clerk of a shop facing the spot where the installation had been told Shanghai Daily yesterday that it had only been there for one or two days and was gone yesterday morning.

“I don’t think adults would have hated it because, after all, it contained nothing indecent, but young children might have found it a bit scary,” she said.

Li Jia, brand manager of Harbour City of which the mall is a part, said a young artist, adept at making use of discarded objects for art, had created the installation at the request of the mall.

“We meant it to be young, fashionable, trendy and interactive,” she said.

“We understand that the installation caused some controversy due to where it was placed, and we reacted by removing it right away,” she added.

Li said new installations for the New Year will be revealed next month.
