SEVEN luxury hotels in Shanghai have been fined for unhygienic room cleaning practices.

The Bulgari Hotel Shanghai, Four Seasons Hotel Shanghai and the PuLi Hotel and Spa have been fined 2,000 yuan (US$292) each by health authorities in Jing’an District for failing to clean and disinfect disposable products and also repeatedly using items.

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai and Le Royal Meridien Shanghai were given the same fine by health authorities in Huangpu District.

Mandarin Oriental Pudong and Ritz-Carlton Shanghai were also given the same fine by the Pudong New Area’s health authorities.

All the seven five-star hotels were given a warning.

Blogger Wu Dong, who uses the pseudonym Huazong, posted an 11-minute video on his Weibo social media account in November revealing unhygienic practises at hotels in China.

The video shows cleaners wiping cups and sinks with dirty towels and sponges. Some use the same towel to wipe the toilet seat, while others could be seen soaking cups in shampoo.

The video had footagefrom 15 luxury hotels, seven of them from Shanghai.

A staff member at the Four Seasons Hotel Shanghai used a bathroom sponge to clean washbasins and glasses. The cleaner also used a dirty towel to clean basins and cups.

At the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, cups were soaked in shampoo and abath towel was used to clean the floor and wipe bathroom glass.

The video also shows similar practices at luxury hotels in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.

Wu said he had stayed at 147 five-star and boutique hotels in China over the past six years, spending more than 2,000 nights in them.

He said he shot the video after he came across a room attendant using a bath towel to clean cups.

Wu’s personal information has been leaked and he has received death threats.

A sophomore student in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, surrendered to police after sending death threats to Wu.

Wu received messages on Weibo reading “waiting for your death” and “I will spot you and kill you” from the student in December.

Wu’s personal information was leaked by employees of Hilton Garden Inn Guiyang and InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in WeChat groups.

Both hotels have apologized and promised to improve training and supervision.
