Thirteen bloggers using WeChat, Weibo and other social media platforms for illegal behavior were caught and punished in 2018, Shanghai police said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, 320 others were given warnings, police said.

In July last year, two people who ran a public WeChat account were detained for selling access to dozens of novels they didn’t own the intellectual property rights for.

Police said the novels illegally published were read over 10 million times, and the two could face the criminal charge of intellectual property right infringement.

In August, a man surnamed Shen who has an account on Weibowas detained three days for posting an obscene picture of two women and a man sharing a bathtub against the backdrop of Lujiazui, Shanghai.

The picture was quickly shared online, and Shen was punished for spreading indecent messages, police said.

In October, two live streaming hosts were detained for making illegal profits by recruiting internet spammers to draw people into commodity and stock trading.

The two could face the criminal charge of running illegal businesses, police said.

In June, a Weibo user surnamed Dong was detained 10 days for posting pictures of himself in “indecent poses” wearing police and army uniforms.

Police said he was punished for insulting army and police uniforms.

A few others were punished for spreading rumors.

Police warn that the internet is not a sanctuary for outlaws and illegal acts will face punishments.
