The new year’s first snow is likely to fall briefly today in the city with the mercury plunging below freezing point in the outskirts, forecasters said.

According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, a strong flow of cold air from northern China is rolling southwards bringing winds and smog. By 4pm yesterday, the air quality of the city was marked as heavily polluted.
