Two new types of transformers for the city subway system may save on maintenance costs and energy consumption.

One transformer developed by Shanghai Huguang Transformer Co can be broken down into small pieces and reassembled inside the tunnel. The pieces are lighter than 500 kilograms each and can be easily transported into tunnels without the need for excavation.

The other transformer can cut power consumption by 70 percent.
