From:Shine  |  2019-01-18 15:29

A man has been detained for knocking down a traffic police officer at a roadblock on Nanpu Bridge set up to net drunk drivers, police said on Friday.

The incident took place at 11:20pm last Sunday.

Huangpu District police officer Ye Qing signaled for the driver to stop for a check, but the driver sped up and fled, knocking him down in the process.

Ye suffered multiple bone fractures due to the incident, police said.

The motorist speeds through the roadblock.

Police tracked the car down to the crossroads of Jinxiu Road and Qiancheng Road in the Pudong New Area, and caught the driver, surnamed Sun, the next morning.

Sun has confessed to drinking wine on Sunday evening and, out of fear of being punished by police, fled from the roadblock, police said.

He allegedly said that he left the car somewhere away from home and took a taxi because he feared police would hold him responsible as he knew he knocked down an officer.

Sun faces the charge for impeding police work and can be sentenced to up to three years in prison, police said.
