Close to 3 million people visited city parks during the Spring Festival holiday, a drop of 4.2 percent from last year blamed on bad weather, Shanghai's greenery authorities said on Sunday.

The peak was on Wednesday, a sunny day when the parks welcomed 600,000 people, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

Nearly 87,000 tons of domestic garbage were handled during the holiday, down 16.3 percent from last year. The more than7,600 tons of kitchen waste, soaring 52.8 percent from last year, were a measure of the success of the garbage sorting scheme.

About 30,000 sanitation workers were on duty during the holiday, cleaning up1,500 tons of garbage daily.
